3 Moving Tips When You Work From Home

Posted on: 31 March 2015

If you have a move coming up, friends and family may think it's easy for you to handle everything on your own, since you work from home. However, the interruptions will prove to be a pain. You must find professional movers, coordinate your move date and time, as well as continue to keep your clients happy. If having a moment's downtime will disrupt your income, check out the following three moving tips when you work from home.

1. Ensure There is No Disruption to Your Income

Moving can be expensive. So you don't want to have a disruption to your income, especially if you have not planned for the financial downtime. Before the movers arrive, pack up your office yourself to minimize distractions around you. Have another tote to the side to ensure you can pack your essentials and take them to your new location yourself. This minimizes losing your important items.

2. Hire an Assistant

There are bound to be many moving companies in your area. You want to ensure you have one that provides quality services for a reasonable amount. While obtaining quotes online is a fairly simple step, you still need to go through each to ensure they have exactly what you want.

To prevent taking too much time away from your business, hire an assistant to help you plan your move. Not only will your assistant speak with the moving company, but they can also coordinate your utility disconnections at your current home and connections at your new residence. This person can be your family member, friend, or even a freelance contractor. Just make sure they have the available time to commit.

3. Get Movers Who Pack and Unpack For You

This is a more expensive option, but you'll be able to continue working. Residential movers can pack up your home for you. Taking the time to pack your home and move items causes you to miss conferences and get behind in your work. Professional movers will bring all the necessary items, such as wardrobe boxes to keep your hanging items neatly on their hangers, totes for other items, shrink wrap, and dishware boxes.

Ensure they've labeled each box accordingly so that when they arrive at the new location everything is organized. Here are two handy box identifying tips:

  • Have a different color tape for each room. Place that color tape on the entrance door to the new rooms the boxes go to.
  • Place large labels around each box so it's easy to identify what's in the contents.

When it comes to unpacking they will set up your bedroom and other large furnishing items for you. You can then unpack smaller items at your leisure.

The above three tips will ensure your move is as smooth as possible. It will limit the interruptions to your busy work day.

Tips For Moving

When my employer was purchased by another company, I wondered what it meant for my job. Although I was nervous about being let go, I quickly discovered that I was one of their best people. After talking with my new boss, they explained that they needed me to travel around for work to train new departments. Because I didn't have a family, I was the best employee for the job. Unfortunately, the company branches were in worse shape than my employer originally suspected. A two-week business trip quickly turned into six months, and I realized that it might be smarter to move to new areas instead. I have moved 16 times now, and I know what it takes to get the job done.
